Meetings notes: WG VTC, 8/23/2013

WG VTC Friday, August 23, 2013
Participants: Philip, Suzanne, Linda, Duane.

At the annual meeting in Fairbanks the IMC provided feedback and comments regarding the new mock-ups and how the reports should be produced. The WG agreed to produce draft reports containing the metrics in the mock-ups using real data. There will then be distributed to a wider audience for comment.

Notes:
Revisiting the mock-ups it was noted that some of the language would need to be revised to avoid confusion.
It was also agreed that the group would focus on producing the network level report first as this could be used to communicate beyond the IMC, e.g. the Executive Board and NSF. It was also noted that we might include a general IM update at the beginning of each report to improve outbound communications with these other groups.
It was noted that there should be two tables of recent data packages - one for newly published data and one for recently updated data.
The group then discussed each metric in turn with Duane to identify the mechanism by which the information could be extracted from PASTA. Duane confirmed that most of these metrics were already available using the web services, in particular:

For each metric the API calls would be:
Graphics

  • Total number of data packages: Query the Audit Manager for data package insertions (CREATE) by time period, aggregating to create increasing total.
  • Data package downloads: Query the Audit Manager for a list of downloaded data packages by time period and aggregate as necessary.

Tables

  • Number of data packages published by period: Query the Audit Manager for data package insertions by time period, aggregating as necessary.
  • Total number of published data packages in NIS repository: Query the Audit Manager for data package insertions by time period, aggregating as necessary.
  • Number of data package updates/revisions by period: Query the Audit Manager for data package updates (REVISION) by time period, aggregating as necessary.
  • Total size/number of records: There is not a mechanism, at present, for extracting this metric.
  • Recently Published Data Packages (last three months): The Audit Manager can be queried for identifiers and then the metadata can be parsed for a random selection.
  • Recently Updated Data Packages (last three months): The Audit Manager can be queried for identifiers and then the metadata can be parsed for a random selection.

Current Issue(s): Lack of a mechanism to extract the size of the repository using a web service. Consider documenting this as a requirement in the TRAC system (add to ticket #721, https://trac.lternet.edu/trac/NIS/ticket/721).

Actions:

  1. Discuss effort required with Ryan Raub to see if one of the GIOS student programmers can create the draft report – PTarrant.

Next Meeting (VTC): September 2013.
